The Sponsorship Agreement allows SAH to sponsor a number of refugees each year for resettlement to Canada through the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) program. SAHs may allow other groups in the Community to sponsor refugees under their agreements. These groups are called constituent groups (CGs). Your constituent group may be made up of friends, relatives, parishioners – people who bring you together, who are committed to playing the role of private sponsor. You can then turn to an SAH and work under its roof. There are two main types of sponsorship services: sponsorship agreement holders and organizations, usually resolution agencies that help make Five People applications. Some do both, while others specialize in one or the other. There are also organizations that offer pro-Bono legal advice to support sponsorship applications, and workshops and other resources to make your private sponsorship a success. Advising an organization that facilitates sponsorship is an important step in building your app. These organizations can help you go through the process faster and with better information. They will advise you on how to form your group and assign tasks, choose between different sponsorship paths, and develop a colonization plan to help a newcomer after arrival. They can also introduce you to the many services to support the colonization and integration process, including housing, employment, language, life skills and psychosocial support.

Working with an SAH associates you with a wealth of information and experience, as many of them have allowed sponsorship for years. Each SAH works a little differently than the next, so sponsor groups need to figure out which one is best for them. Many SAHs are religious organizations that host sponsoring groups of all faiths; Some, however, require sponsoring groups to work across their communities. Some SAHs are registered charities that can keep funds raised for sponsorship in trust for your group and issue tax credentials for donations, others cannot.
